Men's Soccer Recap - Week 5
Another exciting weekend of men's PACWEST soccer
A very interesting weekend in PACWEST men’s soccer, here’s a look back.
SATURDAY
Langara Falcons 4
VIU Mariners 2
This was a crazy game with a ton of offensive production as the Falcons came back to beat the visiting Mariners.
In the 13th minute Micheal Heppelle opened the scoring for the Mariners after a loose ball came his direction. He used a perfectly placed shot just inside the far post sneaking it by the diving keeper to get the Mariners on the board. They added to their lead in the 23rd minute when a juicy rebound off a direct kick came to Louis Goldbrunner and he was able to boot it home for his second of the season.
Cue the comeback.
The Falcons cut the lead in half in the 30th minute on an outstanding left footed shot by Henrique Claros who scored for the second time this year. Just two minutes later they would strike again after a crossing pass in the box deflected off the keeper, then off of forward Owen Holscher and into the back of the net for his third of the campaign. A lucky goal, but it tied it before halftime.
In the second half the Falcons scored what would turn out to be the winning game in the 67th minute after a scrambly play in front of the Mariners net, a loose ball came to Cobe Monte who buried it.
They would add some insurance in the 88th minute when Tyler McCaul sent a beautiful crossing pass to Felipe Silva who redirected it off his knee and into the net.
Capilano Blues 2
Douglas Royals 2
The Blues opened the scoring in the 19th minutes when Sebastian Cirotto picked the pocket of a Royals defender and went in alone on the keeper, tallying his Conference leading sixth of the season.
In the 39th minute and the Royals pushing for the equalizer, Luciano Keramen was knocked down in the box which resulted in a penalty kick. Matteo Falcone took the shot and made no mistake getting his team on the board with his third of the season.
The Blues would regain the lead in the 67th minute on a great feed from Cirotto, Kaden Routley tallied his second of the season.
The lead didn’t last long, because in the 72nd minute LJ Milfrise delivered a beautiful ball after using his body as a shield running down the middle of the pitch, then fed it to Keramen. With an outstanding one-touch shot, Keramen scored flipping over an outstretched keeper.
SUNDAY
Langara Falcons 2
Capilano Blues 1
Two first half goals by the Falcons was the difference as they sweep the weekend and take sole possession of first place in the standings.
They would open the scoring in the 36th minute when Taynour Bashghareh controlled a sideline throw-in with his back to the net, calmed the ball, spun and blasted a shot past the keeper.
Four minutes later Henrique Claros stole a ball off a fallen defender, walked in and with a nifty left-footed shot beat the keeper for the eventual game winner. It was his second goal of the weekend.
The Blues battled hard but just couldn’t get the timely goal when they needed it. With time winding down in the 89th minute, they finally got a goal, and it was by their leader; Sebastain Cirotto. He would get to a loose ball in the box, turn and make no mistake, scoring his Conference leading seventh of the season. However, it was too little, too late as the Falcons would capture the victory.
VIU Mariners 1
Douglas Royals 1
A tight game all around that ended in a 1-1 draw with both schools earning an important point in the standings.
The Royals opened the scoring with time winding down in the first half. Matteo Falcone took a pass at half, then proceeded to carry the ball deep into Mariners territory before delivering a perfect pass to Joe Badger. The speedy forward got by the defender, then snuck a shot through the legs of the keeper to give his Royals the lead heading into the break.
With the Mariners pressing for the equalizer in the second half, Dani MacAskill would answer the bell in the 69th minute, and score for the visitors.
Following that goal the keepers and backline shut the door keeping the score tied at one.
