Men's Week 4 Wrap-Up
All four schools earned points in Week 4
An important weekend for points in the PACWEST standings ends with each school earning something positive.
SATURDAY
VIU Mariners 1
Douglas Royals 1
After not much flow in the first half in Nanaimo, the Royals struck first in the contest. Forward Lucianno Keramen showed tremendous patience on the left side, letting the Mariners’ keeper commit by diving at the ball. Once the keeper committed, Keramen chipped it by him, controlled the ball and made a left footed tip into the back of the net.
With time winding down in added time, Mariners’ striker Micheal Heppelle was hauled down in the box by a Royals defender that led to an Ori Fisher penalty kick. The third year Victoria native calmly stepped up and blasted it off the keeper hands and into the back of the net for the tying goal.
Langara Falcons 2
Capilano Blues 0
The Falcons captured an important win on Saturday, shutting out the visiting Blues getting a small measure of revenue after losing 3-1 in their last meeting.
In the 31st minute the Falcons opened the scoring when Taynour Bashghareh played a crossing pass off his chest in the box that was deflected to Taigo Shimada who snuck a shot past the Blues keeper who thought he had it. That goal would stand up as the game winner.
In the second half, the Falcons added some insurance in the 74th minute when Beckham Hatch stole a Blues pass near midfield then carried the ball just above the crease and blasted a right footed shot into the top left corner. It was a gorgeous play giving the Falcons a two-goal lead.
Falcons’ keeper Adriel Agcaoili made eight saves and earned the clean sheet.
SUNDAY
Douglas Royals 1
VIU Mariners 0
For just the second time this season the Royals earned a victory with a one-goal win over the Mariners in Nanaimo.
Both teams had their chances in the first half, but the keepers played sharply. It wasn’t until the 79th minute when the Royals scored. The Mariners tried to pass the ball back to a defender, however a streaking Corwin Schieck flew down the middle of the pitch, intercepted the pass, then got a shot off underneath a sprawling keeper and the ball rolled into the net. It would turn out to be the game winner.
Keeper Benoit Lutz needed to make four saves to record the shutout.
Capilano Blues 1
Langara Falcons 0
After getting shutout on Saturday, the Blues would bounce back and earn a clean sheet of their own as keeper Brandon Lecce only needed to make one save in the victory.
The game’s lone goal came in the 67th minute off a Blues corner kick. After the initial stop was made Riley Marshall was able to locate the bounding ball and knocked it past the Falcons keeper.
