Men's Soccer Week 3 Rewind
Four shutouts featured in Week 3 of the men's soccer season
This past weekend the PACWEST showed why the Conference is extremely balanced with all four teams being able to win on any given day. The weekend featured four shutouts.
SATURDAY SEPETMBER 21
Langara Falcons 1
Douglas Royals 0
After seeing their women counterparts record a 1-0 win over Douglas, the Falcons men earned a clean sheet of their own over the Royals on Saturday.
Their lone goal came early in the game when Henrique Claros tried a crossing pass, but the ball ricocheted off a Royals defender and into the back of the net. The unlucky bounce gave the visitors the lead they would not relinquish.
Keeper Adriel Agcaoili made four saves and captured his second straight shutout against the Royals in as many games. Meanwhile the Royals keeper Benoit Lutz was sharp to give his club a chance, making six saves.
VIU Mariners 3
Capilano Blues 0
These two are very familiar with one another after playing just six days ago.
The Mariners were looking to bounce back after that loss last weekend and bounce back they did. Brian Bland opened the scoring in the 25th minute on a gorgeous redirection with his back to the net, he was able to tip it past the Blues keeper Brandon Lecce. That would be all the scoring before halftime.
In the second half the Mariners poured it on looking for some insurance. In the 63rd minute Ori Fisher was sent in on his own after a beautiful pass and made no mistake giving the visitors a two-goal advantage with his first of the season. Josh Rayner then added one more goal in extra time for his first of the campaign.
Keeper Cody Carter earned the clean sheet.
SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22
Capilano Blues 1
Douglas Royals 0
In a game that went back and forth and had limited opportunities, the Blues earned the shutout over the visiting Royals with a second half goal.
In wet, cool conditions Sebastian Cirotto was credited with his Conference leading fifth goal of the season in the 56th minute giving his club a lead they would not relinquish.
Blues’ keeper Graydon Sherle made a pair of saves to complete the clean sheet while Royals’ keeper Benoit Lutz kept his club in the game making three saves on four shots.
VIU Mariners 1
Langara Falcons 0
The offences didn’t generate much on Sunday when the Mariners and Falcons met in the rain. As a matter of fact, the keepers combined made just two saves.
The lone goal of the game didn’t come until the 76th minute when VIU’s Charlie Smith tallied his fourth of the season. The goal would hold up as the game winner and allowed the Mariners to sweep the weekend with a pair of shutouts.
Mariners’ keeper Mateo Enrich recorded the clean sheet on Sunday.
