The PACWEST champion Royals will play in a CCAA national semi-final at the men’s championship tournament on Thursday as they take on the host St. Clair Saints in Windsor.
On Wednesday the Royals dominated the Manitoba champion Brandon Bobcats beating them 5-0. Despite never seeing the Bobcats before Wednesday’s quarterfinal, the Royals jumped on them early when Quinn Desaulniers scored in the second minute giving the Royals the lead. That goal would turn out to be the game winner.
In the 15th minute, PACWEST scoring champ Dominik Hajdecki found the back of the net to extend the Royals lead. Then just before halftime, they struck again as Desaulniers scored his second of the game.
With a healthy three goal advantage the Royals kept pressing in the second half. Joel Badger scored their fourth of the game in the 61st minute, then added his second of the contest just before time expired. The victory pushed them through to the semi-final. Badger was named the Player of the Game.
The Saints also had a big offensive output on Wednesday beating the ACAC champion Keyano Huskies 3-1. They are well rested after missing the OCAA final four playoffs and finishing 7-2-1 during the regular season. Their offence knows how to score goals, collecting 41 during the year, the most in the OCAA west division. Moussa Nizam is their most dangerous weapon, scoring 13 times during the campaign.
The winner will play for a national gold medal on Saturday.
