A pair of schools on opposite ends of the country will come together in Windsor Ontario in a bronze medal quarterfinal at the CCAA men’s soccer national championship tournament.
A mere 5,859kms separates the Mariners and the University of King’s College Blue Devils from Halifax who will lock up on Thursday morning fighting to stay alive in their quest for a national medal on the bronze side of the bracket.
On Wednesday the Mariners fell 1-0 to the Ontario champion Conestoga Condors, who scored in the 48th minute. The Mariners had their chances throughout the game including a penalty kick awarded to Douglas Mtatabikwa, but Condors keeper Mike D’Angelo came up with an enormous save.
With the loss it forces the Mariners to the bronze side of the bracket where they will face the Blue Devils who lost their opening game 2-0 on Wednesday to the RSEQ champion Aigles D’Ahuntsic.
The Blue Devils won ACAA title in penalty kicks 2-1 beating MSVU after finishing second in the standings. During the regular season they finished 9-1-2 outscoring their opposition 30-7 led by Michael Zinck’s six goals. Keeper Ryan Logan was solid with two clean sheets and had a goals against average of under one in 11 games.
The winner moves onto the bronze medal semi-final game, the loser will play a consolation game as their final match of the year.
