The PACWEST champion Douglas Royals open the CCAA national championship in Windsor Ontario on Wednesday afternoon at 12:00pm PST when they meet the Brandon University Bobcats, the Manitoba champs.
After finishing first in the PACWEST the Royals automatically earned a berth into this national championship regardless of what happened in the gold medal game. That said the Royals didn’t just mail it in and they beat the VIU Mariners in a thrilling shootout to capture the Conference title.
They finished 7-3-2 during the regular season and needed just the one playoff win to secure the Conference banner. Interestingly the Bobcats also finished the regular season 7-3-2.
Speaking of the Bobcats, they finished second in the Manitoba Conference but scored the most goals in league play with 36. They were led by two-time Player of the Year Camilo Rodriguez and his 16 goals. In all, they had seven players that scored more than once during the season.
Due to the weather in Manitoba, the Conference playoffs were held at an indoor facility with the Bobcats earning a 1-0 win in the Conference gold medal game to qualify for the nationals.
This game will no doubt start on the slow side as they go through a feeling out process. That said, both teams do have some firepower up front, so when an opportunity presents itself the backline and keepers need to be ready. The Bobcats gave up 19 goals this season the Royals coughed up 18.
The winner moves onto a national semi-final.
