Soccer Season Preview: Capilano Blues

The Capilano Blues have retooled and are preparing for a turnaround season after being the only PACWEST team to miss out on the 2021 post season.

With a new head coach in David Andreychuk, they are looking to get back to their winning ways of 2015, 2016 and 2018 when they won the Conference to played for a national crown. Their last national medal was a bronze in 2016 and last won gold in 2008 when the championship was held in BC, like it is this season.

2021 in Review: The Blues finished with just three wins and nine points last season and missed the playoff championship tournament. They won their first two games of the season but then lost six in a row, scoring four goals over that stretch and finished the campaign at 3-6.

One Player to Know: senior Merlin Fisk enters his final season in the PACWEST and has been a leader already. He scored two goals last season for a team that didn’t score a lot and is poised to bring the Blues back to the playoffs.

One Key Stat: The Blues have a great battle brewing in goal for the number one keeper position and will be solid all-season.

One Key Fact: Every continent will be represented on the Blues roster in 2022. They have a great mix of fifth year veterans with several first and second year players. According to coach Andreychuk the fifth-year players have turned into player coaches taking a rookie under their wing like a big brother and little brother scenario, teaching them the ropes

The Blues open the season with three straight road games at VIU and Douglas before finally hosting their home opener on September 18th against Langara.
