Mariners & Royals Claim Victory
Week 4 of the PACWEST soccer season wrapped up on Sunday
A quick recap of Sunday's PACWEST men's soccer action.
Douglas Royals 2
Langara Falcons 0
For the second consecutive Sunday the Royals have beaten the previously undefeated Falcons and have moved into a first-place tie in the PACWEST standings.
The game on Sunday showed incredible energy as both teams went back and forth in their third meeting of the season. It wasn’t until the late stages of the first half that the first goal was scored when Zachari Ouariti-Zerouali found the back of the net. It was his second of the weekend and he scored to open the game on Saturday.
Then shortly after Ouariti-Zerouali’s goal, Rozmehr Aghabaygy scored just before halftime giving the home side a 2-0 lead. Oddly enough Aghabaygy also scored on Saturday giving his club a 2-0 lead at the half.
Unlike Saturday however, the Royals held on for a shutout victory with no scoring from either side in the second half.
The Royals (3-0-4) will host the Falcons (4-2-1) again on Wednesday night in a make-up game with first place on the line. It’ll be the final time they meet in the regular season.
VIU Mariners 2
Capilano Blues 1
For the second straight Sunday the Mariners go into Mulgrave School and take down the Blues by a single goal to wrap up Week 4 of the PACWEST men’s soccer season.
The Blues, who didn’t play on Saturday, would open the scoring in the fourth minute when veteran Merlin Fisk gave the home side a 1-0 lead. Adrian Sahagun recorded an assist on the goal.
The Mariners found the equalizer in the 25th minute when the Conference’s leading scorer Vasilis Bagiopoulos scored his seventh of the season and second of the weekend. The game remained tied heading into the break.
In the 69th minute the Mariners took the lead for good when Douglas Mtatabikwa scored his first of the season. Bagiopoulos was credited with an assist on what would be the game winner.
Both teams will enjoy a Thanksgiving weekend bye before the final four games of the regular season.
