Royals Face Hawks for National Gold
The Douglas Royals face the Humber Hawks on Saturday afternoon for the CCAA national title
The Douglas Royals face the Humber Hawks in the 2021 CCAA national gold medal game on Saturday in Calgary at 2:00pmPST.
For the Royals it’s their first trip back to the gold medal game since 2017, while the Hawks won the title in 2018. The last time the Royals won gold was in 2005.
This game has all the makings of a classic match-up and will be exciting to watch. The Royals haven’t allowed a goal in the tournament shutting out the George Brown Huskies 3-0 on Wednesday then had a 2-0 win over the St. Thomas Tommies on Thursday.
The Hawks meanwhile beat the Brandon Bobcats 1-0 on Wednesday in the quarters, and then escaped the semis with a victory over the Nomades de Montmorency in penalty kicks 4-3 on Thursday. They are the three-time defending Ontario champions and the top ranked team in the CCAA coming into the tournament.
The Royals defence will be again tested in this gold medal bout facing the Ontario scoring champion Karamvir Mehmi who had nine goals in the regular season. In all the Hawks scored 33 times in six games and only allowed six against. One of the biggest reasons why was fifth year defender Luca Gasparotto who was named an All-Canadian and will make it tough on the Royals offensive push.
Scoring the first goal will be critical as it may be the only one scored against these two very good and well coached teams.
