Sunday's Regular Season Finale Summary
The regular season came to a close on Sunday
Capilano Blues 2
VIU Mariners 0
With their playoff hopes crushed in Saturday’s loss, the Blues came out with arguably their best game of the season on Sunday shutting out the Mariners and their quest for a first place bye.
The Blues got a goal from Jared Crane in the 29th minute breaking the scoreless tie. It was his first of the season and a goal that turned out to be the game winner.
In the 51st minute Nima Moazeni Zaden gave the Blues some insurance with his fifth of the season, giving him a share of the PACWEST scoring title with Yianni Siafakas of the Douglas Royals.
Keeper Colby Moore made three saves, two of which in the second half for a clean sheet.
Despite the win, the Blues season still comes to a close as they miss the playoffs. The Mariners on the other hand limp into the playoffs as the third seed having won only once in the last six games. They will face the Langara Falcons in Saturday’s semi-final.
Douglas Royals 0
Langara Falcons 0
In the regular season finale on Sunday the Royals and Falcons played to a scoreless tie. The single point really meant nothing for the first place Royals who clinched first after the Mariners loss earlier in the day. The Royals now enjoy a bye into the PACWEST gold medal game scheduled for Halloween.
The single point for the Falcons however allowed them to leapfrog the Mariners into second place in the standings. They will now face the Mariners as the home team in Saturday’s PACWEST semi-final, the winner moving on to face the Royals.
In Sunday’s scoreless tie the keepers stood tall when tested. Jacob McCall for the Royals made two first half saves, while Falcons’ keeper Aleks Kalajdzic made two saves, one in each half.
Coming into next weekend’s semi-final the Falcons have been solid in the month of October recording points in each of their five games which includes a shutout and tie against the Mariners.
