Week 2 Men's Soccer Summary
A recap of the four games over the weekend
SATURDAY
VIU Mariners 3
Douglas Royals 2
It was a tail of two halves as the Royals and Mariners met for the first time since the 2019 PACWEST gold medal game in which the Royals won.
In Saturday’s game the Royals saw a pair of goals from Yianni Siafakas in the third and fifth minutes giving his squad a 2-0 lead which stayed that way until extra time just before half.
In that extra time Taylor Arbour of the Mariners cut the lead in half and completely changed the momentum of the game. The Mariners fed off that goal coming out of the locker room finally tying the game in the 74th minute when Hirotaka Nishikawa scored. Then the game winner came in the 83rd minute when Grayson Chalifoux found the back of the net for the second straight week.
Capilano Blues 3
Langara Falcons 1
For the second straight weekend the Blues’ dynamic duo was on display again and propelled them to a victory on Saturday. Jeremy Monn-Djasngar opened the scoring with his second of the year in the third minute to give the Blues an early lead. In the 15th minute Nima Moazeni Zadeh tallied his third of the season with a goal that would stand up as the game winner.
Before halftime the Falcons cut the lead in half when Henrique Claros scored in the 21st minute giving the visitors some life.
The Blues however put the game away in the 51st minute when Monn-Djasngar scored his second of the game, breaking the back of the Falcons. Keeper Colby Moore wasn’t very busy seeing just two shots on goal in the victory.
SUNDAY
VIU Mariners 3
Capilano Blues 2
The Mariners were able to hold onto a one-goal victory on Sunday in a first place showdown with the Blues.
The home side opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Taylor Arbour scored his second in as many days. The lead however was short lived when Nima Moazeni Zadeh tied it for the Blues just seconds later for his Conference leading fourth of the young season.
In the 20th minute Mariners’ veteran Shun Takano was awarded a penalty kick and made no mistake burying it taking the lead back. He then made it a two-goal game with the eventual game winner in the 22nd minute.
The lone second half goal belonged to the Blues when Merlin Fisk scored his first of the year in the 61st minute but it was as close as they would come. Mariners’ keeper Ben Chamberlin made seven saves in the victory.
Douglas Royals 5
Langara Falcons 1
Coming into Sunday’s match the defending champion Royals were the lone team without a victory. However that changed in a hurry.
The Royals opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Rozmehr Aghabaygy scored his first of the season. It would actually hold up as the only goal of the half.
In the 50th minute Mattoe Falcone scored the eventual game winner before Armaan Bhagwanji scored just two minutes later put the score out of reach.
The Falcons lone goal was recorded in the 69th minute as Henrique Claros tallied his second of the weekend breathing a bit of life into the visitors, but it didn’t last long.
In the 75th minute Ryosuke Sudo restored the Royals three goal lead, then Quinn Desaulniers scored in the 86th minute to put the exclamation mark on the win. Keeper Jacob McCall had to make three saves in the victory.
