Rivalries Ignite
A pair of men's soccer games are set for Saturday afternoon
Douglas Royals (0-2) @ VIU Mariners (1-0) – Merle Logan Turf – 3:00pm | WATCH HERE
For the first since the 2019 PACWEST gold medal game the Royals and Mariners will lock-up. The Mariners are coming off an exciting 2-1 victory over the Langara Falcons in their lone match last weekend as Matthew Coburn and Grayson Chalifoux each scored. Both players will be looking for more against the Royals as they were part of that gold medal loss in 2019.
Last weekend the Royals lost both games by a single goal; falling 2-1 on Saturday and 4-3 on Sunday. Oddly enough all four goals they scored came in extra time. In Sunday’s loss to Capilano they scored three goals in extra time despite being down 4-0 after 90 minutes.
Langara Falcons (1-1) @ Capilano Blues (1-0) – Lillooet Park – 3:30pm | WATCH HERE
The Blues played just once last weekend, but what a game it was. After scoring four times in regulation it looked like they would cruise to an easy win, however they gave up three goals in extra time to the Douglas Royals and were lucky to hang on. Nima Moazenizaden scored twice in the victory and was named the Athlete of the Week.
Last weekend the Falcons celebrated their home opener victory with a 2-1 defeat of the Royals at Swangard Stadium. The following day they fell by that same score after taking the ferry to Nanaimo to play the Mariners. The encouraging stat for the Falcons is the fact that the three goals were each scored by a different player.
In their four meetings in 2019 the Blues won the seasonal series 2-1-1.
