The regular season ends today when the VIU Mariners welcome the Capilano Blues in a game that will determine first place in the PACWEST.
The Blues have won three straight and have 23 points in the standings. They sit three points back of the Douglas Royals who finished their season on Saturday with 26 points. A Blues win would tie the Royals in points, but because they have beaten the Royals twice this season they hold the tiebreaker.
If first place isn’t enough motivation, the Blues are also playing for a berth in the CCAA National Championship tournament. The PACWEST men receive two spots in the national final, so regardless of the outcome in the PACWEST title game next week the two combatants will be seeded nationally. If the Blues win on Sunday they will be in that very game.
The Mariners can play spoiler today. They have been eliminated from the PACWEST championship tournament, however if they can upset the Blues today that will force the Blues into a semi-final match-up with the Langara Falcons next week. Perhaps upsetting the Blues however will be a tall task for the Mariners who have not even scored in their three meetings so far this year, losing 4-0, 3-0 and 2-0 yesterday.
