Men's Saturday Basketball Recap
The Blues, Chargers and Bearcats get the matinee win
It was a busy Saturday afternoon in men’s hoops as Week 5 came to a close.
Capilano Blues 98
VIU Mariners 88
The visiting Blues outscored the Mariners in three of the four quarters on Saturday afternoon and tallied a 10-point win to earn a weekend split.
Kash Lang caught fire from the outside knocking down six-three pointers and finished with a game high 31 points on 11-15 shooting. As a club the team shot 49% from the field and 45% from the three-point line with their starters scoring 83 of their 98 points. Former Mariner Peter Li added 18 points in the contest and hit three-threes.
The Mariners fall for just the second time this season after shooting 49% from the field and 47% from downtown. Ekman Sohal tried to counter the hot shooting of Lang dropping 28 points on the strength of five-three pointers and 10-17 shooting. Both starter Kye Kotapski-Tinga and Levi Van Egdom off the bench added 15 points in the loss.
Next weekend the Blues (5-3) visit the Okanagan Coyotes (3-5) and the Mariners (8-2) enjoy a bye.

Douglas Royals 61
The Chargers earned the lone sweep in men’s basketball this past weekend with a 16-point victory on Saturday afternoon.
They set the tone early outscoring the visiting Royals 30-10 in the first quarter and never looked back. They had outstanding production from their bench led by Ty Bunn and his team high 24 points on 7-9 shooting and he nailed five-three pointers. Thomas Beames also came off the bench and finished with 12 points, scoring seven of them from the free-throw line. The bench accounted for 53 of the Chargers 77 points.
After digging themselves into a first quarter hole the Royals found it difficult to climb out. They shot 33% from the field but struggled with outside shooting at 25%. Derrick Monroe had another solid contest with a game high 25 points on 43% shooting. Their bench wasn’t as nearly as productive accounting for just five points.
Next weekend the Chargers (6-2) welcome the Langara Falcons (3-5) and the Royals (2-8) visit the CBC Bearcats (3-5).

Okanagan Coyotes 107
For the second straight day both the Bearcats and Coyotes offence hit the 100-point plateau with their hot shooting.
The Bearcats shot 50%, got to the line 36 times and had three players score at least 20 points. D’Andre Palmer-Ormsby tallied 28 points on 11-21 shooting and had nine assists. Daylen Webb hit nine free-throws and finished with 26 points in the victory and Dane-Dre Anglin collected 20 points.
Despite the loss the Coyotes shot the ball well at 51% from the field led by Phil Holmes Jr and his game high 32 points on a very efficient 14-18 shooting and he snagged 15 rebounds. He was one of five players in double figures and was aided by Trevon Roots and his 23 points while Kiyo Brown added 14 points and 11 boards off the bench.
Next week the Bearcats (3-5) host the Douglas Royals (2-8) and the Coyotes (3-5) host the Capilano Blues (5-3).
