The regular season finale tips off this weekend
Camosun Chargers @ Capilano Blues – Friday February 21, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
This will be fun to watch this weekend as the Chargers and Blues meet in the regular season finale. Both teams have clinched a playoff berth; the Chargers seeded second, while the Blues are third.
It will be interesting to watch if both teams rest some of their starters as these games mean nothing in the standings and could represent a semi-final preview.
The Chargers have won four in a row and five of their last six coming into this weekend and swept the Blues in November by scores of 79-58 and 75-58. They shot the ball well at 44.8% with Cormick Brown exploding for 21.5 points a game.
During that weekend in November the Blues couldn’t get a stop defensively when they really needed one. On the offensive side they shot 33.1% with Kash Lang as their top scorer averaging 16.5 per game.
They have won three in a row and four of their last five games coming into the regular season finale and would like to head into the post season on a high, upsetting the Chargers. The Blues know they will face the sixth seed in a quarterfinal next week on their home floor, but their opponent is still yet to be determined.
Following this weekend’s games at Capilano, the Chargers will enjoy a first-round bye into the semi-final on Friday next week.
On Saturday afternoon the Chargers and Blues meet again at 3:00pm to conclude their regular season schedule.
VIU Mariners @ Langara Falcons – Friday February 21, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
The Mariners travel to Langara for a date with the Falcons this weekend to conclude the regular season. They split last weekend at Capilano but have already clinched the #1 seed heading into next weekend’s championship tournament.
They face the Falcons for the second doubleheader weekend this year after beating them by an average of 26.5 points in November. Kaeleb Johnson was the big scorer averaging over 15 points a game, but his club was very balanced offensively and shot 49%. The Mariners have earned a first-round bye into a semi-final next week.
Meanwhile the Falcons are still fighting for playoff positioning currently sitting as the five seed, four points back of the idle CBC Bearcats and four points up on the Douglas Royals. If they can earn a weekend sweep over the Mariners, it would pull them into a fourth-place tie with the Bearcats and they own the tiebreaker. However, if they lose both this weekend and the Royals win both, they would be tied and the Royals have the tiebreaker, meaning the Falcons would finish sixth. Still plenty to play for.
Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm, the Mariners and Falcons meet one more time.
Okanagan Coyotes @ Douglas Royals – Friday February 21, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
These two teams will wrap up the regular season this weekend, the Royals looking to move up the standings while the Coyotes are looking to play spoiler.
If the Royals can sweep the Coyotes and the Langara Falcons lose two in a row to the VIU Mariners, the Royals would leapfrog into the fifth seed ahead of next week’s playoff tournament. However, if the Coyotes can steal one from the Royals and use the spoiler card, the Royals would finish as the six seed.
Regardless the Royals know they have qualified to play in a quarterfinal next weekend and the Coyotes will conclude the season on Saturday.
Earlier this season the Royals and Coyotes met in Kelowna for a pair of competitive games, with the second game decided by just seven points as the Coyotes captured their lone win of the year.
Coming into the weekend the Royals have won just once in their last five games and the Coyotes have won just once all year.
These two schools will meet for the final time on Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm.
