Men's Week 13 Basketball Recap
The playoff picture is starting to come into focus in men's basketball
FRIDAY
Camosun Chargers 96
Langara Falcons 83
This was a fun game to watch with hot shooting from both teams.
The Chargers shot 43% from the field and connected on 12-three pointers for their 16th of the season. Four of their five starters finished with double figures led by David Finch and his game high 26 points on 10 of 20 shooting. Jaime Palamos-Molins had 10 points, and 11 assists and Cormick Brown came off the bench to nail four-three pointers in the win.
With the victory, the Chargers have clinched the second seed in the standings and will enjoy a bye into the PACWEST semi-final at the championship tournament coming up in two weeks.
The Falcons were equally as hot shooting 41% and hit 15-threes. All five of their starters drained at least two-three pointers with Cameron Vaughn leading the charge with 24 points.
On Saturday afternoon these two schools meet for the final time in the regular season.
Capilano Blues 83
Okanagan Coyotes 79
This was right down to the wire with the Blues playing a gutsy road game to fend off the Coyotes and capture the victory. The second quarter that the Blues won by six points was the difference.
The Blues shot 41% with Kash Lang leading his club offensively with 19 points. This victory is the Blues’ second straight and third in their last four games.
Friday night was one of the best games the Coyotes have played this year shooting 46% with multiple players contributing. Manny Biden finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead his team and Luke Huddlestone had a team high 17 points.
The Blues and Coyotes meet again on Saturday afternoon for the final time this season.
SATURDAY
Camosun Chargers 91
Langara Falcons 71
The Chargers finished off the home portion of their schedule on Saturday with a 20-point win over the visiting Falcons.
Hot shooting was the name of the game for the Chargers, shooting 50% and draining 15-three pointers. Izzy Helman was the high man with 29 points aided by six-three pointers. Not to be outdone, Cormick Brown also nailed six-threes and finished with 20 points coming off the bench.
Both Jaime Palamos Molins and Jakob Neufeld had a double-double, for Palamos Molins, it was his second straight game with one.
On the other side, the Falcons shot 43% led by Cameron Vaughn and his team high 18 points. With the setback, the Falcons remain in fifth spot in the standings with two games to go but only four points up on the Douglas Royals. Any combination next week of a Falcons win or Royals loss would clinch fifth for the Falcons.
Next weekend the Chargers (17-5) visit the Capilano Blues (13-9) and the Falcons (9-13) host the VIU Mariners (20-2) in the regular season finale.
Capilano Blues 86
Okanagan Coyotes 76
The Blues have clinched third place in the standings and will play the sixth seed in a quarterfinal at the PACWEST championship tournament in two weeks on their home floor.
They beat the Coyotes on Saturday by shooting 48.5% with a balanced offensive attack. Arshya Ghasemi came off the bench to score a team high 17 points and Kash Lang added 15 in the victory.
A late surge by the Coyotes fell short on Saturday in their final home game of the year. They shot 43% with Manny Biden getting full marks with a game high 27 points and 11 rebounds and Damani Green collected 13.
Next weekend the Blues (13-9) host the Camosun Chargers (17-5) and the Coyotes (1-21) visit the Douglas Royals (7-15).
CBC Bearcats 74
Douglas Royals 61
The Bearcats wrap up the regular season with a win on their home floor and finish with four wins in their last five games, clinching fourth place in the standings. They will meet the fifth seed in a PACWEST quarterfinal in two weeks at the championship tournament.
On Saturday night they shot 42% with D’Andre Palmer-Ormsby leading the way with 21 points and Cam Carter added 13 and nine rebounds. On their defensive side, they created 17 turnovers and had 12 steals to help in the victory.
The Royals also shot 42% from the field but couldn’t dig out of a second quarter hole that saw them getting outscored 19-7. Kai Bohmert had a nice game of 20-points to lead his club offensively.
Next weekend the Bearcats (11-13) enjoy a bye week before the start of the playoffs and the Royals (7-15) host the Okanagan Coyotes (1-21). They are sixth in the standings, four points back of the Langara Falcons for fifth. If the Royals sweep the weekend and the Falcons lose both games to the VIU Mariners, the Royals would advance to fifth place due to the tiebreaker.
