The Chargers, Blues and Bearcats win on Saturday
Capilano Blues 93
VIU Mariners 83
The Blues played a gritty road game and caught fire early outscoring the Mariners 21-10 in the first quarter en route to an upset win.
Offensively they shot 53% from the field with Russell Curley knocking down all four of his three-point attempts and finished with 20 points. In all, six Blues scored at least 11 points giving them the balanced scoring they needed.
The Mariners couldn’t dig themselves out of the first quarter hole and have their six-game winning streak snapped. They shot 39% offensively and were led by Kameron Bender who dropped a game high 25 points and Kye Kotapski-Tinga came off the bench and added 17 in the setback.
Next weekend the Blues (11-9) visit the Okanagan Coyotes (1-19) and the Mariners (20-2) will attempt to recover during their bye week.
Camosun Chargers 72
Douglas Royals 53
The hometown Chargers captured the weekend sweep after the lopsided win on Saturday afternoon.
Four players on the offensive side hit double figures led by Izzy Helman and his game high 20 points and Joe Martens came off the bench to add 12. It was their 15th win of the season and opened an eight-point lead in the race for the second seed in the standings.
The Royals struggled making shots on Saturday shooting 28% from the field with just one player reach the double-digit plateau. Scottie Austin led their offence with 15 points in the loss. As a team they remain six points back of fifth place in the standings failing to gain any ground on the idle Langara Falcons.
Next weekend the Chargers (15-5) will host the Falcons (9-11) and Royals (6-14) begin Week 13 on Thursday visiting the CBC Bearcats (10-12).
CBC Bearcats 86
Okanagan Coyotes 82
The Bearcats collected their third straight win and 10th of the campaign with a four-point win over the hometown Coyotes.
Offensively they set the tone early outscoring the Yotes 31-19 and never really looked back. They shot 41% from the field with five players reaching double figures. Cam Carter off the bench and Favour Igbinyemi each poured in 15 points to lead their team and D’Andre Palmer-Ormsby added 14 in the win.
The Coyotes had a strong second half and fell just short of their bid for a comeback, dropping their 19th game of the season.
They shot 32% from the field with Damani Green catching fire for 27 points to lead all scorers and Manny Biden finished with 14 points and 19 rebounds.
Next week the Bearcats (10-12) open the week on Thursday at home when they host the Douglas Royals (6-14) and the Coyotes (1-19) finish off the home portion of their schedule when they welcome the Capilano Blues (11-9).
