Men's Week 12 Preview
It's a busy weekend for men's PACWEST basketball on Friday and Saturday
Capilano Blues @ VIU Mariners – Friday February 7, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
It’s a weekend doubleheader that features two of the top three teams in the Conference when the Mariners welcome the Blues.
The Mariners sit comfortably in the top spot, 12 points up on the nearest competitor in the standings and have won five in a row. They swept the weekend at Capilano in the first semester, but the Blues played them tough in a pair of games determined by five and nine points respectively. Overall, the Mariners are averaging a Conference high 91.5 points per game and shooting 45% from the field and an impressive 36% from the three-point line.
The Blues are six points back of second place and the all important bye into the semi-final with six games to go. They will play the next four on the road so have their work cut out for them, particularly this weekend at VIU. They have won three of their last four games and overall are averaging 78.3 points a game while shooting 42% from the field.
On Saturday afternoon, they meet for the final time in the regular season with tip-off set for 3:00pm.
Douglas Royals @ Camosun Chargers – Friday February 7, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
For the second time this season the Chargers and Royals meet on the hardcourt but this time the scene has shifted to the island.
In their first weekend doubleheader at Douglas, the Chargers scored wins of 20 and 16 points respectively and have been very good on the road at 8-2 this season. That said, they are at home for their next four games looking to build up their lead in the standings. As the second seed, they are six points ahead of the Blues with six games remaining in the regular season.
The Royals hold down the final playoff spot, trailing the CBC Bearcats by four points for fifth place in the standings. They limp into this weekend having lost their last four games and find themselves on the road for the next four. They need just one more win to clinch the final playoff spot and are looking to get that done this weekend.
These two schools will meet for the final time on Saturday in the rematch at 3:00pm.
CBC Bearcats @ Okanagan Coyotes – Friday February 7, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
This weekend the Bearcats are trying to earn valuable points in the standings, while the Coyotes are desperately trying to keep their season alive.
The Bearcats hold down the fifth spot in the standings but are only two points out of fourth place and four points out of third as we come towards the end of the season. They have officially clinched a playoff berth and now are fighting for positioning with four games left on their schedule. They have won two of their last three games with this doubleheader as their final road trip.
The Coyotes are still mathematically alive in the PACWEST standings, but they need to win to keep a pulse with six games remaining on their schedule. They have seen the Bearcats before, losing both games at CBC in November falling by 31 points the first night, but played much better in the rematch losing by only seven the next day.
Saturday afternoon the Bearcats and Coyotes meet for the final time this year at 3:00pm.
