Men's Basketball Week 10
A busy weekend for men's PACWEST hoops
VIU Mariners @ Okanagan Coyotes – Friday January 24, 7:00pm | WATCH HERE
Schools that bookend the standings will tip off Week 10 of the regular season on Friday night in Kelowna when the Mariners (15-1) visit the Coyotes (1-15).
The top ranked Mariners suffered their first setback last weekend in a split with the visiting Camosun Chargers. Despite the split, they are still six points up on the idle Chargers as they roll into the Okanagan this coming weekend and face a Coyotes team they swept by an average of 31 points at the beginning of the year. They shot 38.5% in the weekend set and found balanced scoring from several players.
The Coyotes have lost four straight, and have tasted victory just once this season, making this weekend a David vs. Goliath matchup. They are averaging 64 points per game while the Mariners are averaging just over 90.
On Saturday afternoon these two schools will meet for the final time this season at 2:00pm.
Capilano Blues @ Douglas Royals – Friday January 24, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
This will be a fun matchup to watch as the Blues visit the Royals this weekend with only two points separating them in the standings. It’s the second weekend they will meet after the Blues earned a sweep in mid-October at Capilano with an average win of 18.5 points.
The Blues (7-7) have won once in their last six games and have fallen to a .500 record. This weekend they obviously want to win, but they also need to find some consistency in their scoring. Russell Curley had a terrific doubleheader last weekend against the CBC Bearcats and was named the Athlete of the Week. The coaching staff is hoping that it will lead to more production from the sharpshooter.
Last weekend the Royals picked up a pair of gritty road wins at Langara and are riding high with momentum coming into this weekend on their home floor. They have won three of their last four and have moved to within two points of third place in the standings with their next four games at home. Offensively they are shooting 36.5% from the field and averaging 72 points a game.
These two schools meet again on Saturday at 7:00pm.
CBC Bearcats @ Langara Falcons – Friday January 24, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
Two points separate these two schools in the PACWEST standings as we enter Week 10 of the regular season.
The Falcons (7-9) scored a pair of tight wins at CBC earlier this season so currently hold the tiebreaker which could come into play in a few weeks. They won by 10 and seven points respectively in mid-October shooting 45.5% from the field. The Falcons are riding a two-game winning streak and are back at home for the third straight weekend looking to take advantage.
Meanwhile, the Bearcats (6-10) sit in the final playoff spot and snapped their three-game skid last weekend when they split at Capilano. They find themselves two points back of the Falcons in the standings, making this weekend a crucial one for points and playoff positioning knowing that their opponent holds the tiebreaker card as well. They will need to win and win by a large margin to take that card back.
Following Friday night’s game, these two schools will meet again on Saturday at 7:00pm.
