Men's Week 9 Basketball Preview
Three very important match-ups in weekend doubleheaders
Camosun Chargers @ VIU Mariners – Friday January 17, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
This is the marquee match-up this weekend in men’s basketball as the top two teams in the Conference go head-to-head in Nanaimo.
The top ranked and undefeated Mariners (14-0) will welcome the second place Chargers (11-3) on Friday and Saturday in a doubleheader that should be extremely balanced and exciting. Back in mid-November when these two schools met at Camosun the Mariners bounced out with wins of eight points and one point.
During that weekend the Mariners shooters held the hot hand connecting on 49.2% from the field and were a blistering 62% from the three-point line in the second game. Kaeleb Johnson was the leading scorer averaging 22.5 each contest.
The Chargers were able to respond with hot shooting of their own connecting on 39.2% from the field and David Finch paced them with 23.5 points per game.
Coming into the weekend the Mariners record in unblemished while the Chargers have won six straight, a streak that began following their one-point loss to the Mariners.
On Saturday afternoon they will see each other for the final time in the regular season with tip-off set for 3:00pm.
CBC Bearcats @ Capilano Blues – Friday January 17, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
This is a very intriguing match-up as the Blues welcome the Bearcats for a weekend doubleheader beginning on Friday night. They split their first meeting in mid-November with a pair of games that were relatively close in score with the Bearcats winning the first game by three points before the Blues came back the next night to win by 15.
The Blues (6-6) are coming off a bye immediately following the holiday break so haven’t played a meaningful game since November 30th. The break came at a great time after they had lost four straight and needed to regroup. During that weekend at CBC, they shot 42.1% and Kash Lang led the way averaging 18.5 a game. Former Bearcat Damein Coleman averaged 10 points on the offensive side.
Following two home losses last weekend to VIU, the Bearcats (5-9) hit the road for the first time in 2025 as they visit the Blues. During their match-up in November they shot 33.2% with Spencer Dododza turning in a great individual performance averaging a double-double of 13.5 points and 15.5 rebounds.
There are only two points separating these two schools, so this could be a very important match-up for crucial points in the standings. They will meet again on Saturday night at 7:00pm.
Okanagan Coyotes @ Langara Falcons – Friday January 17, 8:00pm | WATCH HERE
For the second time this season the Falcons and Coyotes meet for a weekend doubleheader. In mid-November the Falcons earned the weekend sweep, beating the home side by 54 points in the first game before following that up with a 14-point victory.
Offensively the Falcons (5-9) were dialed in all weekend connecting on 54.3% of their shots led by Edriel Asirit who dropped in 21.5 a game. On the defensive side they held the Coyotes to just 27.7% from the field and kept most of their shooters off balance.
The Falcons come into this weekend having lost four straight while the Coyotes (1-13) have only one victory, which came three games ago.
The rematch is set for Saturday at 3:00pm.
