The Camosun Chargers will play for their first ever CCAA national medal on Saturday when they face the Ontario champion Humber Hawks in the 2024 bronze medal game.
The Chargers dismantled the host Mount Allison Mounties on Friday 73-52 in their strongest and most complete game of the national championship tournament. They shot 38% from the field with Lucas Sheets the catalyst draining 20 points and Jesse Vogel finished with 10. All but one player on the roster scored and hit the scoresheet.
On the other side the Hawks are no doubt disappointed to be playing for a bronze after winning their fourth straight Ontario title two weeks ago. They opened the national championship with an impressive blowout win on Wednesday beating the ACAA champion MSVU Mystics by 47 points. In their semi-final on Thursday they ran into a very solid Keyano Huskies team from Alberta and fell 63-56 wrecking their chance at a national gold. They bounced back on Friday beating the RSEQ champion Vanier Cheetahs 80-61 to punch their ticket to the bronze medal game.
The Hawks are vying for their second national medal in three seasons, winning gold in 2022. Back in 2019 they captured a bronze when the tournament was hosted by Langara.
For both teams this is their fourth game in as many days, as fatigue will start to settle in particularly as the game progresses which could become a factor.
These two schools met in 2016 with the Hawks claiming an 83-51 victory in a quarterfinal match-up. The Chargers are looking to even the series…eight years later.
