The Columbia Bible College Bearcats Department of Athletics and Recreation is pleased to announce the hiring of a new men’s basketball coach.
Drew Slaght will immediately take over all head coaching responsibilities and begin to prepare for the 2021-2022 men’s basketball season.
“Through our interview process it became clear to us that Drew was the best fit to not only coach and lead our men’s basketball program but to mentor the young men on the team in what it means to be Christ-centred and tenaciously competitive.” said CBC Director of Athletics and Recreation Mike Teeter.
As a player Slaght started his post-secondary experience as a student athlete playing at Trinity Western University from 2006-2008. He then went on to play from 2008-2011 in the PACWEST with Douglas College. During that time Drew was a 1st Team All Star in 2010-2011. Following his time in college Slaght went on to play for the Athletes in Action (USA) going overseas on basketball tours to Romania, Moldova, and Beijing. In 2013/2014 Slaght was signed to and played for the Seattle Mountaineers of the American Basketball Association (ABA).
Since his playing days Slaght has gained a reputation as a strong skill development coach having worked with both high school and post-secondary student athletes. “I am passionate about coaching and teaching the game. I value the opportunity to speak into the lives of the individuals that I work with to focus on character, integrity, and leadership development.” said Slaght.
Over the past ten years Slaght has had many coaching opportunities from being an assistant coach with the Capilano Blues Women’s Basketball program to being an assistant and head coach for several high school teams. Starting in 2017 Slaght expanded his coaching involvement to the club side. He has been a head coach and the head skill development coach for BC SWISH Basketball Club since 2017.
“Drew has a great network within the basketball community throughout the Lower Mainland. We are excited to see Drew take this next step in his coaching journey moving to the college ranks and are confident he will build a strong men’s program for years to come.” shared Teeter.
