The host Falcons will meet the Atlantic Conference champion (ACAA) Hollard Hurricanes on Thursday night as the featured game. They last met in 2013 with the Hurricanes pulling out an 87-86 victory in the semi-final. That year the Falcons won bronze while the Hurricanes won silver, falling to the VIU Mariners in the gold medal game.
The Falcons made an early exit at the PACWEST championship falling to the Camosun Chargers 93-91 in the quarterfinal after giving up a fourth quarter lead. The Falcons can score points in a hurry and love to get up and down the floor fast. Their “big 3” all finished in the top 10 in PACWEST scoring. Antonio Jhuty dropped 24.1 points a game, Moeiz Athaya tallied 20.5 and Royce Sargeant was good for 16.3 a game.
They will need to be on the lookout for the CCAA Player of the Year. Jace Colley was second in the ACAA scoring 23.5 a game and was among the Conference leaders in blocks (22), assists (77) and steals (27). He becomes the first player ever from the ACAA to win this award.
As a team the Hurricanes won their seventh straight Conference title behind an undefeated 21-0 regular season. They beat the Crandall Chargers in the ACAA title game 86-71 to advance to the national championship. The Hurricanes are three-time defending bronze medalists but the last time this tournament was in BC they finished fifth during the 2014 championship at Quest University.
The Falcons are in search of their fourth gold medal winning in 2014 and back-to-back in 1998 and 1999. The host team has only won gold twice since 1975 and last time was in 2001 when the Humber Hawks captured gold. The Hurricanes meanwhile are looking for their first ever gold medal.
