Royals Set To Defend
The Douglas Royals women's curling team is ready to defend their national gold medal
The Douglas Royals are back to defend their national gold medal at the CCAA Curling Canada Championships in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba beginning on Wednesday.
The CCAA national championship is one of four prestigious curling events happening at the same time at the Portage Curling Club. The other three include the U SPORTS/Curling Canada University Curling Championships, the 2020 CanadInns Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, and the Everest Canadian Senior Curling Championships.
This will be the third season the CCAA/Curling Canada championships — an event for colleges, institutes and non-U SPORTS universities — operates with the support of Curling Canada.
The Royals are skipped by Kayla MacMillan and will play in an eight-team round robin event with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals and medal games on Sunday. The Royals team also consists of Patty Wallingham (Third), Sarah Loken (Second) and Kylie Karoway (Lead).
The defending champion Royals are the only PACWEST school at this national championship tournament and will open their title defence on Wednesday when they face the NAIT Ooks from Edmonton. Their other opponents during the round robin include the Humber Hawks, Fanshawe Falcons, Red Deer Queens, Concordia Thunder, Augustana Vikings and Sault Cougars.
