Alf McGuire inducted into CCAA Hall of Fame

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is proud to announce that Alf McGuire has been inducted into the CCAA Hall of Fame in the Builder category. Nominated by Vancouver Island University (VIU), McGuire’s legacy within collegiate sports, particularly badminton, is one of tireless dedication, transformative leadership, and unwavering commitment to student-athletes.
The CCAA Hall of Fame honours the remarkable achievements of individuals who have significantly contributed to Canadian collegiate athletics. The coach category celebrates those whose leadership, mentorship, and competitive excellence have elevated collegiate sport. These coaches have guided and inspired student-athletes to succeed on and off the field of play, leaving a profound and enduring impact on their teams, their institutions, and the broader CCAA community.
A fixture in the CCAA badminton community for more than two decades, McGuire served as the national Badminton Convenor for an incredible 20 seasons, from 1994-95 through 2014-15. His leadership and vision helped shape the landscape of the sport across the country, providing structure, consistency, and opportunities for countless athletes to grow and compete at the highest level of collegiate badminton.
“Alf was truly a cornerstone of collegiate badminton in Canada,” said Danielle Hyde, Director, Athletics & Recreation at Vancouver Island University. “His legacy is measured not just by the years he served, but by the lives he touched and the positive impact he made throughout the sport.”
Known nationally for his warmth, enthusiasm, and exceptional storytelling, McGuire’s presence at events was always felt and appreciated. Whether organizing championships, guiding policy, or simply cheering from the sidelines, he did it all with a smile and an unwavering passion for the game.
His contributions as a convenor were matched by his long tenure as a coach and mentor. Under his guidance, student-athletes thrived not only in their athletic pursuits but in their personal development as well. He championed fair play, inclusivity, and the value of sport in education, which continue to define the CCAA community today.
A beloved figure from coast to coast, McGuire’s infectious enthusiasm and commitment to excellence made him a respected leader and a friend to many. His induction into the Hall of Fame recognizes his outstanding service and celebrates his deep and lasting impact on the CCAA and Canadian collegiate sport. The CCAA Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place June 17th in Kelowna, British Columbia.
