The Mariners and Chargers battle for bronze on Saturday
#2 VIU Mariners vs. #4 Camosun Chargers – Saturday February 22, 3:00pm | WATCH HERE
The island rivalry ignites in the postseason as the Mariners and Chargers meet for the men’s PACWEST bronze medal on Saturday afternoon.
It’s not the match both these teams wanted to be in, but once that first serve is sent over the net, the competitive juices will be flowing.
Saturday afternoon is a quick turnaround for the Mariners who fell in a heartbreaking fifth set on Friday night to the Douglas Royals after being ahead 2-1. The Chargers have had plenty more time to rest, after losing their semi-final on Friday afternoon in this same timeslot. They dropped their match in four sets to the COTR Avalanche.
During the regular season series, the Mariners won three of their four meetings. In October the Chargers won the opening match in five-sets before the Mariners came right back to win in three-straight the following day. The rematch took place in January at VIU with the Mariners winning both in five and four sets respectively.
These two schools have had plenty of playoff meetings with their most recently last year in the semi-final in which the Mariners won in four sets.
The Mariners last won bronze in 2016, and the Chargers haven’t finished with a bronze medal since 2013.
