Mariners Sweep
The VIU Mariners are back in the gold medal match after a three-set sweep
VIU Mariners 3
CBC Bearcats 0
The Mariners and Bearcats met for the first time in 12 years in the PACWEST playoffs on Friday, but the meeting was brief as the Mariners earned the three-set sweep.
On their home floor, the Mariners continued their hot pace from the regular season and took down the Bearcats 25-18 in the first set, a sign of things to come. They used that momentum the rest of the way and claimed the second set 25-16 before finishing off their opponents 25-13 in the third set.
The top seeded Mariners have so much offence and are very balanced in their attack. Aimee Skinner was the Player of the Match with 10 kills (unofficially) but Emma Schill, Grace Brisebois and Megan Duffy played major roles in the win as well.
The Bearcats found it tough to get into a rhythm with several serving errors. Rookie of the Year Makayla Friesen was named the Player of the Match and tried to keep pace with the Mariners attackers collecting six kills. Jill Barkley was very solid for the Bearcats and had six kills (unofficially.)
With the win the Mariners will play for PACWEST gold on Saturday afternoon at 5:30pm when they meet the Camsoun Chargers. The Bearcats will battle the Capilano Blues for a bronze medal on Saturday at 1:00pm.
