Avalanche Meet Blues
The opening match of the 2022 volleyball championship tournament
#5 Capilano Blues @ #4 COTR Avalanche – Thursday February 24 – 12:30pm | WATCH HERE
The PACWEST volleyball championship tournament opens on Thursday afternoon with a women’s quarterfinal when the Blues meet the Avalanche.
The two teams met each other once during the regular season, just three weeks ago with the Avalanche winning in three straight sets; 25-19, 25-20 and 33-31 at Capilano. They come into the tournament on a two-match winning streak as the fourth seed, their highest seeding since 2017 when they were also #4. The last time this tournament was hosted at CBC was in 2016 and the Avalanche won gold as the sixth seed and traveled PEI for the CCAA national championship. Oddly enough the nationals will be hosted in PEI again this year and the PACWEST will send the Conference champion and a wildcard.
Meanwhile the Blues limp into the championship tournament winning just once in their last nine matches which does include being swept by the Avalanche. The Blues are the fifth seed, one better than in 2020 when they upset the third seed to play in a PACWEST semi-final and they still have a handful of players on the roster from two years ago.
The last time these two schools met in a playoff was in 2017 when they battled for a bronze. The Blues came away with the three-set sweep in the victory.
