The Mariners Win a Thriller
The VIU Mariners win in five sets and advance to the gold medal match
What. A. Match. The top seeded VIU Mariners win an exciting five set thriller on Friday night and punch their ticket to the PACWEST gold match beating the COTR Avalanche.
The Mariners won the first two sets before the Avalanche roared back to tie it and forced the deciding set. In the fifth the set went back and forth before the Mariners finally won 15-12.
Both setters put on a show quarterbacking their respective offences and distributing a balanced attack. Jordan Davis for the Mariners helped Jeff Webb collect a match high 18 kills and Rylan Van Kooten added nine while Daniel Macarenhas pounded eight including the match winner.
Meanwhile Vittor Mateus of the Avalanche was named the Player of the Match setting up KeAndre Evans for 16 kills and Diego Policarpo for 12.
The Mariners will face the Camosun Chargers for gold at 8:00pm on Saturday, while the Avalanche battle the Douglas Royals for bronze at 3:00pm.
