The Mariners Win Gold
The VIU Mariners are the 2024 PACWEST champs
VIU Mariners 1
Capilano Blues 0
A majority of the first half of the gold medal match was spent on the Capilano side of the pitch as the Mariners had numerous scoring chances throughout the period.
In the 18th minute, VIU’s Hannah Rose had a great strike off a free kick but Blues keeper Amaya Salvino continued her strong play from Saturday and was up to the challenge, making a two handed save to keep the game scoreless. Minutes later, Salvino was tested again, as Taylor Kinley found herself unmarked against the keeper with a point-blank chance at the net. Salvino made another great save, one of six in the first half.
The Mariners were able to get a ball past Salvino in the 35th minute. Asuka Okabe directed the ball to a streaking Jade Dillabough who took a left footed shot that got past Salvino to open the scoring.
The Blues came close to equalizing at the 65th minute, with Blues Maya Smith letting a shot go from the box that sailed just over the cross bar. They looked like they were building momentum off this play, as Smith had another similar opportunity minutes after.
In the 78th minute, Dillabough went on another run and took a shot inside the box that Salvino deflected directly back at the VIU striker. Dillabough sent the deflected ball high over the crossbar.
Shorly after that, time would expire and Dillagbough’s first half goal would stand as the game winning goal, as the VIU Mariners are the 2024 PACWEST provincial champions!
