Gold Medal Showdown
The Langara Falcons meet the Douglas Royals for men's gold
#3 Douglas Royals vs. #1 Langara Falcons – Sunday October 27, 3:00pm | WATCH HERE
Believe it or not, the last time the Falcons and Royals met for PACWEST gold was in 2001…lots have changed since then. The Falcons have not won gold since, while the Royals have won 10 including last year’s title.
These two schools will battle for PACWEST men’s soccer supremacy on Sunday afternoon with a trip to the CCAA nationals in New Brunswick on the line.
The Falcons earned a berth into this gold medal game after finishing the regular season with the best record in the Conference, 12 points better than the Royals. They also had the best goals for and against differential at +11. Against the Royals during the regular season, they outscored them 6-2 and recorded three shutouts and won the seasonal series 3-1.
Coming into the playoffs the Falcons won three of their four games in October, their only setback was a 2-0 loss to the Royals in the final game of the schedule. The game meant nothing to the Falcons for placement in the standings, but it was critical for the Royals to win to qualify for the postseason.
On Saturday the Royals played an outstanding game and upset the second seeded Capilano Blues with three second half goals and earned a 3-0 shutout. Keeper Matthew Miller wasn’t needed much making only one save in the clean sheet. He should be a lot busier on Sunday against the Falcons and their ability to buzz the goal.
As mentioned, the winner advances to the CCAA national championship in New Brunswick as the PACWEST representative. The championship opens on November 6th.
