The PACWEST women’s gold medal game will feature the Mariners and Blues on Sunday afternoon, with both teams already qualified to attend the CCAA national championship.
With the best record during the regular season the Mariners earned a bye into the PACWEST title game and recorded 11 more points than the third place Blues. They met four times during the regular season including last weekend to finish off the schedule. Despite the discrepancy in the standings, three of the four meetings this season ended in a draw. The only victory was claimed by the Mariners last weekend, a 3-0 win and outscored the Blues in the seasonal series 9-6.
Offensively for the Mariners, Taylor Kinley and Jade Dillabough each scored a pair against the Blues to lead them in the series and Taylor Melnyk countered for the Blues scoring twice on the Mariners.
The Blues earned their way into the gold medal game after a thrilling comeback win over the second seeded Royals on Saturday in the semi-final. They would tie the game at one in the 90th minute, forcing overtime and then would ultimately win it in penalty kicks.
The last time the Mariners and Blues played for PACWEST gold came in 2019 with the Mariners winning. The last time the Blues beat the Mariners in this gold medal game came in 1983. That said, they won PACWEST gold in 2021 with a victory over the Royals.
The Blues are also the host of the CCAA national championship beginning on November 6th. Regardless of Sunday’s outcome, both the Blues and Mariners will play in that tournament, but the winner will have a significantly better schedule when the nationals roll around.
