The Douglas Royals are heading back to the CCAA national championship tournament after a dominating shutout of the VIU Mariners on Sunday in the men’s PACWEST gold medal game.
The Royals controlled most of the play in the opening half and scored first when All-Star Yianni Siafakes batted home a bouncing ball past Mariners’ keeper Ben Chamberlin in the 24th minute. The goal would stand as the game winner.
In the 31st minute the Royals extended their lead when Quinn Desaulniers handled a rebound and banked his shot off a defender and past Chamberlin. The Royals took their 2-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half they continued to control the play behind a strong game from Mattoe Falcone who created several opportunities for his team. The Royals defence was also extremely strong not allowing many attacks by the Mariners to get through. When they did keeper Jacob McCall was there with a couple of tremendous saves to preserve the shutout.
