For the second straight season the top seeded VIU Mariners meet in the third seeded Capilano Blues in the women’s PACWEST gold medal game today at 2:30pm. WATCH HERE
The Mariners sat back and watched a gruelling semi-final yesterday as the Blues played in double overtime and ultimately winning in penalty kicks 2-1 upsetting the second seeded Douglas Royals. Julia Peyton tallied the winner as the four Blues shooter. The Mariners earned the bye into the gold medal game with an outstanding 8-1-3 record with their only loss at the hands of the Blues last weekend.
During the regular season these two met four times with the Mariners winning twice, the Blues once and they tied 2-2. The Mariners outscored the Blues 5-3. Three of the four games resulted in a shutout; Melanie Osborne of the Mariners had two of them. In all she’s been a difference maker recording 22 saves against the Blues this season. Darian Roussy on the other side made nine saves for a shutout on October 19th against the Mariners and overall has kicked away 24 shots in this seasonal series. That shutout performance was the only game the Mariners didn’t score all season.
Today the Mariners are vying for their fourth PACWEST gold since 2014. The Blues on the other hand haven’t had a gold medal around their necks since 2007.
The winner of today’s game will represent the PACWEST at the CCAA national championship at Concordia University in Edmonton, November 6-9th.
