Blues Advance To Gold
The Blues win in a shootout
For the second straight season the Capilano Blues have upset the Douglas Royals in the PACWEST semi-final after a 2-1 victory in penalty kicks on Friday.
The second seeded Royals opened the scoring in 15th minute when PACWEST All-Star Taylor Wettig tallied after a great feed from fellow All-Star Alyssa Lum. The Royals would carry this 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Blues continued their pressure in the second half and would finally get the equalizer in the 65th minute when Brooklyn Doucette lit the lamp.
Both teams had their chances in the late stages of the second half, but couldn’t beat the keepers. Darian Roussy kept the Blues in the game making nine saves while Tess Venables was terrific stopping 11 shots. Overtime was then needed and solved nothing, so the teams then moved to a shootout.
The teams went through five shooters before the Blues finally won it and punched their ticket to the gold medal game. Here is the recap of the shooters:
Douglas – Hannah dela Cruz – scored
Capilano – Mya Fraser – scored
Douglas – Mikaela Montagano – scored
Capilano - Jaimi MacCara – scored
Douglas – Taylor Wettig – missed
Capilano – Brooklyn Doucette – missed

On Saturday the Blues will face the VIU Mariners in the PACWEST gold medal game at 2:30pm. The winner will head to the CCAA National Championship in Edmonton.
