The Douglas Royals will play for PACWEST gold following a 2-0 shutout of the Capilano Blues in Friday’s semi-final.
Oddly in the four regular season games, only one of the nine goals scored was tallied in the first half. Friday however, the only two goals of the game were scored in the first 45 minutes.
In the 10th minute the Royals opened the scoring when Taylor Richardson lit the lamp on a feed from Alejandro Varela. The goal would hold up as the game winning goal.
The Royals second marker would come in 29th minute on a penalty kick. Rafael Domingos made no mistake and buried his opportunity giving the second seed a two goal advantage that they carried into halftime.
In the second half, the Blues put pressure on the Royals defence with the majority of play in the Royals zone. However the defence and keeper Felipe Domingos stood tall. He made six saves in the shutout win.
Looking ahead to Saturday’s gold medal game, the Royals and Mariners haven’t faced each other in the playoffs since 2016 when the Royals beat the Mariners in a semi-final in penalty kicks
