Gold Medal Preview
The VIU Mariners meet the Capilano Blues in the PACWEST gold medal game on Saturday
Defence was the name of the game for Capilano Blues on Friday in their 1-0 victory over the Douglas Royals in the PACWEST semi-final. The victory pushes the Blues through to the gold medal game on Saturday to face the VIU Mariners.
On Friday Adrianna Babinski tallied her first of the season in the 57th minute to give the Blues the lead for good.
Over the course of the year the Blues and Mariners met four times, including twice just last weekend at the end of the regular season. The Mariners controlled their four meetings compiling a 2-0-2 record.
Offensively the Mariners had a balanced attack with seven different goal scorers. Chloe Gummer, the PACWEST Player of the Year scored a pair, as did Justine McMahon and Karen Battie who scored twice on Sunday in the regular season finale.
Their offence had success driving the ball towards the net. They recorded 43 shots on goal in the seasonal series and will no doubt need to do that on Saturday to have success.
The Blues offence meanwhile saw five different goal scores. Claire Ye was the only player to score two during the series.
The Mariners are back in the PACWEST gold medal game for the first time since they won it in 2016. The Blues settled for silver last year in this very game and are looking for their first gold medal since 2007.
The winner on Saturday will advance to the CCAA national championship hosted by the Douglas Royals November 6-10th.
