Coyotes Upset Win
For the second straight day the Okanagan Coyotes complete an upset
The Okanagan Coyotes will play for gold for the second time in three seasons after an upset 75-69 victory over the Capilano Blues on Friday.
Offensively the Coyotes shot 39% but it was their tough defence that didn’t give up much against the second seeded Blues. They would force 21 turnovers, make 12 steals and held the Blues top scorers in check for the majority of the game.
For the second straight game Elizabeth Henne was outstanding finishing with 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Ali Martineau was the Player of the Game leading the Coyotes with 16 points and snagged 10 rebounds while Soleil Wilding added 14 in the victory.
With the win the Coyotes not only play for PACWEST gold on Saturday but earn a spot at the CCAA national championship in Alberta in two weeks.
The Blues were frustrated by the Coyotes defence not getting very many good looks at the hoop. Leading scorer Kirsten Abo struggled early with only four points in the first half but turned it on the second and finished with a game high 19 points. Madeleine Coffin was terrific with 15 points and 17 boards and was named the Player of the Game.
With the setback they will play for bronze on Saturday at 12:30pm.
The Coyotes win was their second upset in as many days and will face either the VIU Mariners or Douglas Royals on Saturday in the gold medal game at 5:30pm.
