The VIU Mariners will play for gold after a dominating win overt the Camosun Chargers
The VIU Mariners are headed back to the PACWEST gold medal game after a dominating 67-44 victory over the Camosun Chargers in Friday’s semi-final.
Offensively the Mariners started early with the Player of the Year Harriette Mackenzie getting the ball down low and setting the tone physically. They did everything right in the first half, except make free-throws and they had plenty of opportunities with the Chargers getting into foul trouble. The Mariners were 11 of 28 from the line with the Chargers committing 16 fouls in the first half alone.
Mackenzie was outstanding on both sides of the floor and finished with a game high 21 points and 14 rebounds and was named the Player of the Game. Ranika Guyton ran the offence and distributed the ball evenly with nine players hitting the scoresheet. Mackenzie Cox had 10 in the win while Guyton added nine and CJ Buckley knocked down seven as they shot 35%.
They will now play for gold on Saturday at 5:30pm with an opportunity to play at the CCAA national championship in Ontario.
For the Chargers they will now play for bronze following the setback after shooting just 24%. The foul trouble to their key weapons hurt the Chargers all game as they finished with a total of 31 fouls. Tegan Michel had 10 points and Rhiannon Ware finished with nine and seven rebounds and was named the Player of the Game.
The bronze medal game is set for 12:30pm on Saturday.
