Day 2 of the PACWEST basketball championship opens on Friday afternoon when the Coyotes and Blues meet with a berth in the gold medal game on the line.
The Blues earned a quarterfinal bye after finishing second this season and will be the “home team” on Friday afternoon. They beat teams by an average margin of 12.6 points during the regular season and tallied over 71 points a contest. They hosted the Coyotes in their only meeting of the season on February 13th and scored a 72-64 victory, shooting 47%. Ida Jonsson Ojala had a massive game with 18 points and 12 rebounds while Kirsten Abo added 12 points.
On Thursday the Coyotes made program history with their first ever post-season win, a 79-64 victory over the Langara Falcons. They shot 34% from the field but their defensive press wasn’t as effective, something they will need to fix if they want to have success against the Blues. Devon Felt was named the Player of the Game with 15 points which included five-three pointers and Soleil Wilding chipped in with 14.
In their lone match with the Blues this season they shot 38.2% in the loss and Paloma Niz Velazquez dropped a game-high 22 points. For a team that likes to shoot the three ball they connected on 20% of those shots.
