A berth in the PACWEST gold medal game is on the line this afternoon when the Blues and Chargers battle in a men’s semi-final.
The Chargers earned a quarterfinal bye with their best seeding in school history and will look to carry on their great season when they face their old rivalry the Blues. They won the seasonal series 2-1 but each game was decided by an average of only eight points. As a team they shot 44.5% and Takeshi Croke led the offence averaging 16.6 points a game. They come into the tournament winning seven of their last eight games.
In Thursday’s quarterfinal the Blues got by the Okanagan Coyotes 109-77 shooting 41.1% led by Martin Bogajev’s 32 and First Team All-Star Tyrone Asenoguan tallied 21. In their seasonal series with the Chargers they shot 41.3% led by Bogajev who averaged 14 points a game while Asenoguan averaged 12.6. They last faced the Chargers in the playoffs in 2019’s bronze medal game and fell 83-68.
It’s been a while since either one of these teams have won a PACWEST gold medal. The Blues last won a Conference title in 2003 while the Chargers have never won gold. The Chargers are actually the two-time defending bronze medalists and the Blues last won a medal in 2017 when they won silver.
