VIU outscore Blues 28-9 in 4th quarter to win PACWEST Gold
March 5, 2016
In the 2016 PACWEST Basketball Provincial Championships gold medal match, the #1 VIU Mariners took on the #3 Capilano Blues to see who would head off to the CCAA National Championships in Ontario, March 16-19th.
It was a very quick first quarter with both teams settling for early shots. At the end of one, the Mariners held a narrow one point lead 14-13 over the Blues. The Blues completely dominated the second and third quarters to outscore the Mariners 42-37 through three. PACWEST Player of the Year Sienna Pollard had to spend the majority of the third and over five minutes of the fourth on the bench as she picked up her fourth personal foul midway through the third quarter.
Early in the fourth the Blues appeared to be in complete control with a 46-37 lead. However, it was fifth-year guard Jamie MacFarlane, playing in her last collegiate game who hit vital back-to-back 3-pointers to begin a run for the Mariners. Pollard and Adams took over from there, getting to the line repeatedly and hitting timely shots. The Mariners outscored Capilano 28-9 in the final frame to win the PACWEST gold medal and provincial banner with a 65-51 victory over the Blues.
Player of the game Jamie MacFarlane had 16 points on 6/11 shooting from the field and four 3-pointers in the game. Tournament MVP Lanae Adams had 19 points and 10 rebounds; Sienna Pollard contributed 14 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
