The PACWEST champion VIU Mariners open the 2024 CCAA women’s volleyball national championship on Wednesday night in Red Deer, Alberta when they face the ACAA champion University of King’s College from Halifax.
The Mariners won PACWEST gold for the first time since 2020 after sweeping the Capilano Blues at the Conference championship two weeks ago. They were pushed to the limit in their semi-final win, but then earned the three-set sweep in the final.
Meanwhile the Blue Devils were the class of the Atlantic Conference all season finishing 17-1 during the regular season and dropped just one set en route to their Conference title. They were led offensively by Maya Lees who recorded 158 kills and Frances Cooke added 146 for a very potent and balanced attack. Their gold medal was their first in school history and they are making their first ever trip to the CCAA nationals.
This will be the Mariners 10th straight appearance at the nationals and are looking for their sixth gold in that span.
The winner advances to play for a semi-final on Thursday night.
