The Capilano Blues open the CCAA women’s national volleyball tournament on Wednesday afternoon in Red Deer at 12:00pm PST when they face the Quebec champion Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx.
Coming into the championship tournament the Blues (9-11) are a wildcard seed and will face a Conference champion right out of the gate. They are making their first appearance in this national champion since 2014 where they finished fifth in Toronto.
The Nordiques (9-7) are a surprise champion out of the RSEQ after finishing fourth during the regular season. They caught fire at the right time beating the top ranked Edouard-Montpetit in four sets during the semi-final, then knocked off the second seeded Garneau in the gold medal match in four sets to punch their ticket to the nationals for the first time in school history.
Offensively they are led by Jade Genereux who collected 154 kills during the season and Emma Waskiewicz who had 133.
The Blues will need to shake off any nerves early on and look to their First Team All-Star Nnya Mbaoma to have a major impact. She was solid all season with 222 kills and was complimented nicely by Vanesa Gatto and her 132 kills.
The winner moves onto the national semi-final scheduled for Thursday night.
