An exciting Week 5 of the PACWEST women's volleyball season
FRIDAY
VIU Mariners 3 – 25-14, 25-18, 25-15
Douglas Royals 0
In a rematch of last year’s CCAA National Gold Medal Match the Mariners cruised to a three-set victory. Karoline Tormena tallied 12 kills and Chantel Cumming had 25 assists.
The Royals offence was quiet as Vania Oliveira led the way with five kills.
Camosun Chargers 3 - 26-24, 24-26, 21-25, 25-18, 16-14
Capilano Blues 2
An exciting five set match with the home town Chargers coming out on top. Mika Yamada was outstanding on both side recording 12 kills and 23 digs. Lauren Montgomery-Stinson led the way with 16 kills and both Maddison Yule and Hannah May each had 11.
On the Blues side Meghan Koven totalled 14 kills and 15 digs. Isabela Lima was there for 16 digs.
COTR Avalanche 3 - 25-14, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22
CBC Bearcats 1
The Avs were well balanced on Friday night with Taylor Whittall leading the way with 13 kills. Kaitlyn Friesen added 32 assists and Brooke Lightburn added 10 digs.
The Bearcats offence was led by Janae Bruinsma and her 12 kills. Nicki Jonkman had 24 assists while Julia Weiss had 12 digs on the backend.
SATURDAY
VIU Mariners 3 – 25-14, 25-15, 25-14
Douglas Royals 0
For the second straight day the Mariners swept the Royals to remain undefeated. In a well balanced offence Danielle Groenendijk tallied 10 kills and Chantel Cumming added another 27 assists.
The Royals again were frustrated by the Mariners defence. Emma Schill led the way with eight kills.
Camosun Chargers 3 - 25-5, 25-23, 15-25, 25-14
Capilano Blues 1
The Chargers again had a well balanced offence on Saturday thanks to the 40 assists from Katie Wayling. She would find Mika Yamada for 12 kills and Sydney Svicenec for 11. Mychaela Roelants was solid defensively with 14 digs.
The Blues offence struggled scoring points, including just five in the first set. Meghan Koven led the way with nine kills.
COTR Avalanche 3 - 27-29, 24-26, 25-12, 25-15, 15-10
CBC Bearcats 2
After falling behind 2-0 in sets the Avalanche roared back to win the match in five. Their offence was orchestrated by the 40 assists from Kaitlyn Friesen. She found Katie Anderson for 14 kills and Mikaela Pushor for 13. Defensively Brooke Lightburn was outstanding with 20 digs.
The Bearcats won the first two sets using extra points, but couldn’t finish off the Avalanche. Both Janae Bruinsma and Jacy Weijdeman had 11 kills and setter Nicki Jonkman finished with 37 assists.
