Mariners Play For CCAA Gold
The Mariners are looking for their second straight CCAA title
The PACWEST champion VIU Mariners will get an opportunity to defend their CCAA national title when they play for gold today at 5:00pm PST facing The King’s University Eagles from Edmonton.
The Mariners punched their ticket to the gold match when they beat the Cavaliers de Bois-de-Boulogne 3-1 on Friday night in Welland Ontario. PACWEST Player of the Year Karoline Tormena led the attack with 19 kills and Danielle Groenendijk added nine. Taylor Wickson was named the Player of the Match with eight kills, five blocks and two digs.
The Eagles advanced to their first ever CCAA gold medal match by eliminating the Douglas Royals on Friday in the semi-final. Their offence is led by a pair of outstanding outside hitters in Jayden Bontkes and Anna Janzen. Bontkes had an impressive 27 kills against the Royals in their four set victory. In their first two matches of the tournament she has 49 kills while Janzen has tallied 38.
The Mariners are looking for their second straight national gold medal and third in four seasons.
