Royals Meet Falcons For The First Time
The Douglas Royals will take on the Fanshawe Falcons in Thursday's quarterfinal
The Douglas Royals will open their quest for CCAA gold on Thursday afternoon at 3:00pm EST/12:00pm PST when they face the Ontario Conference champion Fanshawe Falcons in the quarterfinals.
The Royals are the defending CCAA silver medalists and make their second straight trip to the national championship tournament. This year however they are a wildcard entry after finishing with a PACWEST silver medal two weeks ago.
Last year in the quarterfinal they were matched up with the Grande Prairie Wolves and beat them in four sets. Then in the semis they did face the Ontario champion Humber Hawks and again beat them in four sets; something they are hoping to repeat against this year’s Ontario champ.
Speaking of which, the Falcons are undefeated this season finishing 22-0 and they breezed through their playoffs without losing a set. It’s their first OCAA gold medal in 47 years.
The Royals will need to keep an eye on the OCAA Player of the Year Janelle Albert. She was the only Falcon to hit the 200 kill plateau finishing with 212. She also tallied 65 service aces, 14 assists and 20 stuff blocks. Meghan Morelli proved to be an excellent 1-2 punch with 170 kills and 36 service aces.
Their setter has quarterbacked the offence with a very balanced attack. She picked up 505 assists during the regular season along with 18 kills, 70 digs and a pair of blocks.
These schools have never met at the CCAA National Championship.
