Mariners Play For Gold

Mariners Play For Gold

Redemption for the VIU Mariners defeating the defending CCAA champion Lakeland Rustlers in three straight sets and will play for national gold winning 25-15, 25-15 and 25-17.

The Rustlers ended the Mariners quest for gold last year in the semis in three straight. What a difference a season makes.

Offensively All-Canadian Mikayla Wagner was named the player of the match with 12 kills, nine digs and a pair of blocks. Danielle Groenendijk was an excellent 1-2 punch with Wagner and collected 11 kills, an ace and nine digs. Chantal Cumming was the quarterback in the middle for the Mariners recorded 27 assists and 12 digs.

Defensively the Mariners frustrated the Rustlers offence holding them to just 24 kills and forced them into 14 errors.

Saturday night the Mariners will play for their second CCAA gold in three years and face a familiar foe, the Douglas Royals in an all PACWEST finale.
