The PACWEST Champs Open the CCAAs
The Douglas Royals will face the host GPRC Wolves in Match 1 of the National Championship
The Douglas Royals (21-3) will open their first CCAA championship in 23 years as the featured match on Thursday. They will face the host GPRC Wolves (10-14) in Grande Prairie at 7:00pm PST.
The Royals earned their PACWEST title in a three-set sweep of the reigning champion VIU Mariners two weeks ago. They are led by All-Canadian Vania Oliveria who tallied 242 kills during the regular season and an incredible 33 kills during the PACWEST championship tournament.
They can beat teams in many different ways with their offensive firepower starring rookie Caet McCorkell and veteran Vicki Schley. They combined for 526 kills during the regular campaign. When you add that to Oliveria’s total the Royals are lethal with 768 kills from just those three players alone.
The Wolves had a difficult season finishing with 10 wins and missed the ACAC playoffs. They will be well rested not having played a match since February 17th, which was a three-set loss to the SAIT Trojans. They will need to shake off the rust quickly to stay stride for stride with the high flying Royals. The Wolves are led by Megan Koch who tallied over three kills a set and finished with the second most in the Conference with 298. Only one other Wolf finished with over 200 kills; Jaden Cross tallied 202.
The last time the Royals appeared in this championship Braveheart won the Oscar for Best Picture and Toy Story was the first feature-length computer animated film and was the year’s biggest box office hit. Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose” won the Grammy for Song of the Year.
