PACWEST Spike Night: Bearcats @ Cascades
A home and home to wrap up the regular season
The regular season finale in volleyball is set for this weekend and the PACWEST Spike Night highlights the Battle for Abbotsford on the women’s side when the UFV Cascades (13-9) and CBC Bearcats (9-13) meet.
These schools will trade a home and home on Friday and Saturday.
The first match on Friday will be hosted at UFV the site of the PACWEST championships which begin on Thursday and both the Bearcats and Cascades will play in a quarterfinal. The scene this weekend then shifts to CBC on Saturday for the season finale.
The last time they saw each other was the first week of the season when the Cascades swept the weekend with victories of 3-0 and 3-1. Plenty has happened since.
The Cascades come into weekend off a victory and find themselves tied with Capilano for third in the standings. Their offence found their groove again last Saturday after a two match slide and beat the COTR Avalanche 3-0. Amanda Matsui has been excellent leading the way with over three kills a set while Kim Bauder is always dangerous averaging 2.6 kills a set.
The biggest question is can they slow down or stop Jodi Enns of the Bearcats? She currently leads the PACWEST averaging over four kills a set, the only player who can claim that. She is also third in service aces with 37 in 87 sets played. In Week 1 against the Cascades she collected 30 kills and 31 digs.
The Cascades countered with Matsui’s 20 kills and Bauder’s 17 in Week 1.
Regardless of the outcome this weekend the Bearcats will finish fifth and will face either the Cascades or the Blues in Thursday’s quarterfinal. The Bearcats are making their first trip back to the post season since the 2014 campaign while the Cascades are hosting the championship for the first time in school history.
Friday night these two schools will meet at 6:00pm, before Saturday’s rematch at 5:00pm.
